With the acceleration of China's optical network construction, the application of fiber optic connectors has gradually received attention. High power is the trend of electrical power operation today, and the impact of high power on fiber optic connectors has attracted industry discussion.
EEE Light Wave Technology has published a paper article titled "Quotation, Parameters, Pictures, and High Power Performance of Single Mode Fiber Optic Connector Fiber Optic Connector". In recent years, due to the increasing power of fiber amplifiers, 200 to 400mw has become very common. The output power of Raman amplifiers can even exceed 1W. The impact of high power on fiber optic connectors has become an issue that cannot be ignored. But this issue has also been overlooked. The core of this paper is this topic, which provides a reference conclusion through experimental analysis.
This paper uses five typical fiber optic connectors, one with clean surface, one with gemstone scratches, one with oxidation scratches, one with optical fiber stuck in, and the other with surface contamination. The experimental power is 1W and 3W, respectively. After 10 minutes of irradiation, the connectors are of standard APC and UPC structures. The conclusion of the paper is as follows:
Scratches on the surface of fiber optic connectors and fiber trapping can affect insertion loss performance, but they will not cause serious losses.
2. The pollutants on the surface of fiber optic connectors, especially absorbing polluting materials, can have a fatal impact on the performance of fiber optic connectors under strong light irradiation. Damage such as scratches on the surface of fiber optic connectors can easily create conditions for the retention of pollutants.
The threshold for damage to connection performance caused by short-term strong light at 3.1550nm is 3W
