Product Introduction

What Is an MPO/MTP Armored Patch Cord?

An MPO/MTP armoured patch cord is a multi-fiber cable assembly that combines an armored fiber optic cable with high-precision MPO or MTP connectors at each end. The armored jacket-typically stainless-steel spiral tape-wraps around the cable core to provide superior crush resistance, rodent protection, and moisture shielding without sacrificing flexibility.

The push-pull latch mechanism on every MTP/MPO connector allows quick, tool-free insertion and removal, even in high-density patch panels where access space is limited. By terminating the armored cable with fiber optic connectors, this assembly enables plug-and-play connections between switches, routers, optical transceivers, and media converters.

It serves the same cross-connect and interconnect roles as standard MPO patchcords, but adds the mechanical durability required for outdoor, industrial, or high-traffic environments where conventional cables would be at risk of damage.

Applications

The versatility of MTP/MPO fiber patch cords with armored construction makes them suitable for the most demanding physical-layer deployments across telecommunications and enterprise IT infrastructure.

MPO MTP armored patch cord array trunk cabling connecting MDF and IDF distribution frames

Array Trunk Cabling

Backbone of structured cabling systems connecting main distribution frames (MDFs) and intermediate distribution frames (IDFs) with high-fiber-count armored trunk links.

MTP to LC fanout cassette module breaking out multi-fiber MPO trunk to single-fiber duplex ports

Multi-Fiber Fanout & Cassettes

Break out high-count MPO trunks to individual LC or SC duplex ports via MTP cassette modules for flexible port-level provisioning.

High-density MPO MTP patch cord connected to chassis-based router line card optical interface

High-Density Card-Edge Access

Connect directly to line card and switch-card optical interfaces in chassis-based routers and DWDM platforms where fiber density is critical.

Armored MPO MTP fiber patch cord interconnecting optical distribution frames in cable tray

Optical Cross-Connect

Armored interconnects between optical distribution frames (ODFs), eliminating the vulnerability of unprotected patch cords in open cable trays.

MPO MTP armored patch cords deployed in data center spine-leaf structured cabling architecture

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between MPO and MTP connectors?

A: MPO (Multi-fiber Push On) is the generic connector standard defined by IEC 61754-7 and TIA 604-5. MTP® is a registered trademark of US Conec for a high-performance MPO variant with tighter tolerances, removable guide pins, and an enhanced spring mechanism. MTP connectors are fully intermateable with standard MPO connectors but generally achieve lower insertion loss and higher repeatability. Learn more about fiber optic connector types.

Q: Can MPO/MTP armored patch cords be used outdoors or in harsh environments?

A: Yes. The stainless-steel armor protects internal fibers against crush loads, rodent gnawing, and moisture-common failure modes in outdoor and underground conduit installations. These outdoor armored fiber patch cables are suitable for aerial, conduit, and direct-burial deployments, as well as coastal, industrial, and high-humidity environments. For specific environmental ratings and waterproof connector boot options, please contact our sales team. See also our guide on using fiber optic patch cords outdoors.

Q: What standards do your MPO/MTP connectors comply with?

A: Our MPO/MTP armored patch cords comply with IEC 61754-7 (MPO connector interface dimensions and performance) and TIA 604-5 / FOCIS-5 (MPO connector intermateability requirements). For additional certifications or test reports, please contact our sales team.

Q: What fiber counts are available?

A: Standard options include 8, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 144 fibers. Custom configurations are available through our OEM/ODM program.

Q: How do I choose between singlemode and multimode armored MPO cables?

A: Use OS2 singlemode (9/125 µm) for long-reach links or WDM systems. Choose OM3/OM4 multimode (50/125 µm) for short-reach data center runs-multimode typically reduces system cost due to lower-priced transceivers.

Q: How do I order a custom MPO/MTP armored patch cord?

A: Contact our sales team with the following parameters: connector end types (MPO/MTP male or female, or breakout to LC/SC via other connector types), fiber mode (OS2/OM3/OM4), fiber count (8–144F), polarity type (Type A/B/C), cable length, cable geometry (round/oval/bare ribbon), and jacket color (yellow for SM, aqua for OM3/OM4, or custom). We support full OEM/ODM customization from prototype to volume production.

Q: What are MPO polarity types A, B, and C?

A: Type A (straight-through) maps each fiber position on one end to the same position on the other. Type B (reversed) flips the entire fiber array, pairing position 1 with position 12 and so on. Type C (pairs flipped) reverses adjacent fiber pairs. The correct polarity type depends on your system architecture and transceiver layout.

Q: How should I maintain and clean MTP/MPO connectors?

A: Use a one-click MTP cleaning pen or lint-free cassette cleaner before every mating cycle. Avoid touching the end face, and always cap unused connectors. For detailed guidance, see our fiber optic jumper maintenance and cleaning guide.
