What is fiber optic splitter?
An optical splitter is a passive device that divides optical signals into multiple parts. It is primarily used in FTTx/PON networks to split a single fiber optic cable into multiple branches, enabling support for multiple end users and thereby reducing the load on the backbone fiber network. Additionally, it is employed in the maintenance of long-distance networks, cable television, ATM circuits, and for signal distribution in local/metro networks.
Fiber optic splitters typically have at least 2 ports and can have up to 128 ports. The two most commonly used types are the cost-effective traditional fused biconical taper (FBT) splitter and the compact, high-density suitable planar lightwave circuit (PLC) splitter.
There are several standard diameters of optical fibers commonly used in PLC splitters, which are related to the external dimensions of the fibers. Common fiber diameters include 250 μ m, 900 μ m, and 2mm. Different fiber diameters are suitable for different packaging and applications.

Application
PLC splitters are widely used in FTTH networks to distribute optical signals from a central location to multiple homes or locations. The following figure shows a typical application of a 1x4 PLC splitter. The optical signal from OLT enters the PLC splitter through a single input fiber. Then, the PLC splitter evenly divides the incoming optical signal into four different beams according to a predetermined ratio, each beam carrying the same proportion of input optical power. After splitting, the optical signal is transmitted to four independent output fibers, which distribute the signal to four different users or devices
